Encounter with tailors in Kayonza

While waiting for breakfast, I used a phone to write another coffee story. If you have been following this blog for a while, you are probably aware of my Coffee Break chronicles.

I was at Urugo Roadside Cafe set up in the premises of Urugo Women’s Opportunity Center (WOC). Located in Kayonza, the cafe attracts travelers traversing the Kigali - Rusumo highway, including tourists en route to Akagera National Park.

Before I left, I strolled around and interacted with a few beneficiaries of training programs sponsored by Women for Women International and other donors. Apart from facilitating training, the center provides work stations, equipment, retail outlets and technical support.

Ingabire Aisha is grateful for the opportunity Women for Women International gave her. "I am still sharpening my skills while making money. The skills development aspect is a continuous process." She says. Through her savings, Aisha has managed to buy her own sewing machine. Owning a machine gives her the luxury to work from home and fast track the growth of her business.

Irakiza Martha, a diploma holder in computer science, is envisioning a brighter future. She is planning to start her own label and leverage the power of technology to grow her brand. Meanwhile, she is taking advantage of every opportunity the center brings her way.

From humble beginnings, these girls are making baby steps towards the realization of their dreams. Urugo WOC and partners have truly unlocked their entrepreneurial potential.
