One night in Huye

One night in Huye

After a quick spin around Nyanza, I proceeded to Huye and spent a night at Barthos Hotel. This hotel is built right outside the University of Rwanda. At a glance, the property looks like another block on campus.

From the balcony of my room, I saw many students walking in and out through the gate. The nearest hostel was so close that I could peep through its windows. After dropping my backpack, I left the balcony and walked out of the building. Then I strolled around the neighborhood and felt the heartbeat of the community.

Most businesses set up near the university are eateries. It was time for supper — the busiest time of the day for food vendors operating near the most populous campus in the country.

Students were all over the place. Every table in those food joints was occupied. Many more students were traversing the passage between campus and their favorite dining spots. My nosy-self recognized lovebirds, drinking buddies, soccer fanatics, choir members, clowns and bookworms on a mission to graduate with honors.

After poking my nose into students’ affairs, I decided to have dinner at the neighboring Credo Hotel. Unfortunately, Credo’s restaurant wasn’t taking any more orders because closing time was approaching. This trip happened when curfew used to take effect at 10 p.m.

I finally grabbed something to eat from La Mimi Juice Bar. Before I left La Mimi, I had a conversation with the owner of the business. She is a young lady from Kigali currently pursuing a degree in Information Technology at IPRC South. One of these days, I will share her experiences studying and doing business in Huye. Stay tuned.
